My Thirteenth Summer Sarah Gervais Reflecting on this event many times in my past, I have called it an innapropriate romance, I have called it â€Å"an unprofessional relationship†. However, most frequently, I have called it â€Å"the thing that happened that summer.† As in — remember the thing that happened that summer? What I never called it, for reasons similar to that of why I never made a fuss about it when it happened, was sexual abuse. To me, it was because it felt like an overly dramatic Dr.Phil-ization of what happened. The word â€Å"abuse† seems to imply that a victim was involved, and I have never considered myself much of one. Until now, I have been far too socially-conscious to confess the main reason I have never called it sexual abuse in spite of the fact that it was, in every sense of the word and from every clinical and psychological perspective. The real reason, is because I believed I might have asked for it. The summer camp season I turned 13, I went to a stay over camp for religious Jewish adolescents. I shaved my legs and wore a bra for the first time, still used tangle-free L oreal green apple spray in my hair, and shopped at the nearest La senza. I had my first summer romance a few weeks prior — a disheveled, freckly, brutish boy a year younger who took me for two kayak rides and then broke up with me, calling me a tease and, I was sure, ruining my romantic prospects until eternity. Government legislation has always been a social topic throughout the years. Thus, the bond in which a government creates with its people is vital in order to create a functioning society. This has led many scholars to provide social commentary on government legislature, allowing complex issues to be portrayed in different mediums, generating a greater audience. During the Enlightenment Era, William Shakespeare’s writing were a form of social commentary on the English Government. Endorsed by the king, Shakespeare’s works told tales of tragedy and whimsy, incorporating both fiction and nonfiction elements. The play attributes supernatural powers to the Prospero, the protagonist, allowing him to be able to convey his actions and regain his lost dukedom. In The Tempest, there are various tricks and illusions that unravel on the island. In context to the era, magic and witchcraft were slowly displacing itself from the mainstream practices. Nonetheless, Shakespeare attributes this characteristic to Prospero. These conjurations all stem back to Prospero and his goal to returning things back to the natural order. In his time on the island, Prospero uses magic to bully the island and its inhabitants. These actions are abusive to nature. Prospero’s character contrasts that of other Shakespearean roles because his actions and intentions are selfish and controlling in nature. This is because his character is modeled after a selfish monarch. As previously stated, Prospero uses his power to manipulate people and events on the island. These acts of magic could relate those powers given to governmental legislation. Governments have always possessed the ability t o prevent social disorder through surveying and policing the public. Social commentary around the abuse of these powers root back to their origin. Similarly, Prospero appears as a king ruling over the island. As I went to go to my room my mother suddenly told me to go have a bath and my mind was thinking no water, no not on my cuts, no that will cause more rivers of tears to come gushing from my face, no I said no then my mum came over with some green looking liquid I said to my mum what is that, as the soft words of my mother said this will make the cuts get better. I thought yes a success no more pain for me to endure, so I quite graciously swung out my legs for my caring mother to attend to my wounds like a nurse attending to a patient. What the hell are you doing, cutting off my foot for as I realised my mother was pouring the liquid over my cuts, she said it might sting a bit, oh by god it was stinging it just felt like she had dropped a cinder block on my leg. Finally the tears stoped and the pain stoped and I looked down at my leg and my mother was still pouring the acidic liquid over my leg and I thought yes the pains gone as I finally stopped balling my eyes out from my skull I asked my mum what was that thinking it was some magical liquid that could make any kid cry. She then replied to me that is alcohol it makes your leg better, yea right I thought as I jumped into the bath as quick as I could to wash it off before my leg was all burned off. Then as I emerged from the bath I stuck on some old clothes and thought to myself lets go clime that tree again then I thought no I never want my mother to use that furious concrete burning acid on my body ever again. Pondering what else can I do, then in the corner of my eye I spotted the piano in the corner of my eye, yes what a perfect idea as the sun started to retreat over the leg amputating trees, so I skipped onto the piano stool ad started tho produce my master piece. I didn’t really like the long black keys I only hit the white ones on the edge of the piano so I stared to hack at the keys in some sort of order pleasing myself but that became pretty boring so I pondered what I could do next I started rocking on my stool back and forth back and forth but suddenly there was no forth as I fell backwards into that flying feeling again. No no no I thought, smack as my mum hit me across the head then I thought here comes another lecture not to rock on the stool but then this pulse of pain stuck my thought out of my head ripping through the back of my head.
